The homeowners’ of the River Oak Village sections adjacent to River Drive were looking for a safe place for their families to socialize. The four acres where the club resides was owned by the original developer of River Oak Village, Charlie Hilton, and he sold the acreage to the newly formed River Oak Swim & Racquet Club, Inc. The homeowners’ strong drive to create the club led to many long hours of planning and design of our wonderful club.
The design and groundbreaking started in 1979. The clearing of the property was done by many of the original “Charter” members and with the help of the county. The four lighted Tennis Courts and the large Pool with a High Dive were part of the original design for the club. As part of the planning there is a 75 ft buffer between the club and homes that border the club.
The River Oak Swim & Racquet Club opened in the Summer of 1980 for use by the members. Membership was offered to those families living within a 2-mile radius of the club.
The original nine homeowners were the Board Members at the start, and they created the By-Laws for the Non-Profit club. The members were allowed a guest (up to 3 visits, by invitation, for a minimal fee) to sample the club’s facilities in hopes of interest to join the club. Guests were given a numbered Black band to wear on their wrist, ankle or pinned to their clothing while visiting. Members were required to wear a numbered Red band while on the property.
Today, the club is open to the public without requiring a member to sponsor. The pool is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, with both a kickoff and closing celebration. The club currently has a roster of over 200 family memberships. It has a large Pavilion available to rent for parties and events. The club fields a competitive team in the Gwinnett Swim League during the summer months. Lifeguards are on duty daily from Memorial Day through Labor Day. We also offer both men’s and women’s ALTA tennis teams, and other opportunities for members to enjoy the use of our facilities. The guest rule and fees to visit our club, up to 3 times, still applies. The active Board Executives and Committees continue to adhere to the original By-Laws to ensure that our members have a safe and fun nearby club to enjoy.
River Oak Swim & Racquet Club, Inc. wish is that our current and future members continue with the same vision and passion for the club as the founding members.
*The will be full time life guards on duty from the time Gwinnett Schools break for Summer until Labor Day Weekend*
